Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine

It is said that the Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine was created to enshrine the deity of Mount Fuji in order to calm the repeated eruptions of Mount Fuji. That deity is "Konohanasakuyahime-no-mikoto", who has the power of both fire and water, and is said to have used that power to calm the eruptions of Mount Fuji.

The shrine was built at the current location in 806 AD, which is the oldest of over 1,300 Sengen shrines in Japan, and has come to be known as the head shrine. It is said that the current location was chosen because people believed that the abundant spring water from Wakutama Ike Pond on the grounds of the Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha Shrine could calm the eruptions of Mount Fuji.
The current main shrine, worship hall, and tower gate etc. were built in 1606 AD by Tokugawa Ieyasu in gratitude for his victory in the Sekigahara no Tatakai Battle and his unification of the whole country, and are designated as "National Important Cultural Properties" and "Prefectural Cultural Properties".
It is also one of the 25 cultural properties (constituent assets) that represent the value of the World Heritage Mount Fuji.
